The Power of Rest and Friendships; Vernon, NY, Day 14, May 11

This was a day of renewal. Sleeping late, easy morning, nowhere to go, cleaning the mess of a truck and the inside of the trailer. At 1 pm, my friend of 48 years, Vige, who lives in Clinton, NY, twenty minutes away, picked me up and we spent the afternoon together. For the past ten or so years. we have met every July in Santa Fe/Taos, NM with our other friend, Connie. Any time we can meet in addition to that mini women’s retreat, is a true gift.

As usual, we picked up where we left off, hardly skipping a beat. We caught up on news of friends and family and ourselves both inside and out. It is the inside update that always prompts the connection and healing as we often talk about things we don’t reveal to others. It’s a way to process thoughts and feelings so they integrate into our consciousness in a new way and allow us to often let go of their power and intensity.

We had a lovely lunch, sitting outside on a patio that hasn’t seen much action these past six months given the weather. Everyone was venturing out to soak in the sun and fresh air. We hardly noticed the food as the conversation was more engrossing, except for the flourless chocolate cake which kidnapped our attention for several minutes. And when it was gone, we were much more insightful, brilliant, and enthusiastic about life. Is that a coincidence?

Returning to camp, our two neighbors were gone and we have this whole field to ourselves. Talk about privacy! The dogs are in heaven with no restrictions and so are we. It kind of spoils you to be able to sit outside and not see anyone around you, just fields, woods, distant farmhouses and bright blue sky. I’ll take it! I understand it’s been raining here for a week straight and for some reason, our weather karma has been noticeable: no rain, no snow, no tornados, no hail storms, no wind. I’m very grateful.

While this Harvest Host farm camp didn’t offer any in person host to meet, Vige was our personal guide. We’d been here two years ago so Peter was just as happy hanging out while I ran around with Vige. And, while simple, this site has so much to offer aside from unrestricted fields, pond and woods. There are hiking and biking trails and a long lake with ducks and much more that we didn’t have time to explore. This was a great find for us.

Now, on to western Massachusetts to see my brother for two days. It’s around 225 miles, 4 hours (5-1/2 with stops) so fairly short relative to our recent stints. I’m looking forward to seeing him and revisiting his favorite spots (and now mine). It’s so grounding to connect with friends and family, especially those we don’t see very often. The ties of love bind us.
