Amazing Acadia, Astounding Cali; May 22, Day 25

If you’d told me last year that Cali, our almost 15 year old shepherd mix would not only still be with us but would be able to hike for two hours, covering two miles over boulders including a 350 ft elevation gain, I’d say you were on some good drugs. But that’s what she did, along with me, Lily and Peter. We hiked the Cadillac North Ridge Trail, or at least half of it, based on Cali and my knee limitations. But the views of the bay and ocean beyond were stellar and it was a beautiful way to spend a Thursday before the Nor’easter hits (sometime tonight).

That hike was the highlight of the day. The rest of our time was spent figuring out more silly things that I can’t even bring myself to mention here. We are starting to anticipate leaving on Saturday for New Brunswick, Canada, Fundy National Park, Headquarters Campground. It’s going to be a long drive so we hope to get an early start. But before all of that happens, we have one more full day here and hope to finally get into the town of Bar Harbor. We’ve been in the area for nine days and have driven through town, done laundry and grocery shopping, but nothing touristy. Maybe I’ll finally get my lobstah lunch or dinner. (Truth is, I really just want the melted garlic butter.)

It’s been so nice staying in one place with the trailer and taking the truck on outings. This was the freedom we were missing with Fiona 1.0, our 19′ drivable van. We are reveling in all the comforts of Fiona 2.0 (hot water, separate shower, curtains that create separation and privacy in the morning if one of us gets up early and wants to drink coffee in the dinette area while the other one sleeps), a soft, comfortable bed and more. Sure, there are inconveniences (like Peter in the beginning of a shower saying that the *&$% water wasn’t getting hot; I looked at the hot water read out and it said “E-2”. (“E” anything is never a good sign.) I realized we’d run out of propane in one of our tanks and had to run outside (while in the middle of cooking dinner) and switch propane tanks. But that’s a small inconvenience.

Otherwise, I’m loving the freedom of bringing our home with us, making food we like, drinking good coffee, having the dogs with us and seeing the country and soon Canada. I’ll take this over driving a car and staying in Best Westerns or wherever.

I’ll be curious to see if we actually experience a Nor’easter tonight with wind gusts to 50 MPH and lots of rain. I’ll report back tomorrow!
