Is Mercury in Retrograde? Everything we planned eventually happened, only it was backwards and ended with a lovely dinner followed by Kaiser advice nurse telling me I should go to a hospital tonight (no thank you, it’s an hour away driving dark, lonely country roads and currently 9 pm) because I have an infected blister on my toe. But more on that later.

Today, the sun came out, finally! And the temperature rose into the 60’s! Starlink is still acting up but I think is feeling better with the sun out. However, our connections on phone and wifi are iffy at best.
As for our plans, we ended up driving way too long to get to the wrong place and drove around in circles a few times. We drove pot holed mud roads and winding roads with hairpin turns that had my internal GPS as confused as my phone’s GPS which also had spotty coverage. So when it declared we were at the apparently cute fishing town of St. Martin’s, we were actually in the middle of nowhere on a gravel road. Sigh. At least the scenery was beautiful and very, very green.
We ended up finding a beautiful rocky beach where the dogs could play along the Bay of Fundy. We met a friendly couple and their dog and learned that she works remotely for an American company doing customer service and he just came back from installing cables in the Arctic. He returned here and threw off his arctic gear claiming how warm it is. (I guess everything’s relative.). We were looking for the Fundy trail which is like a Highway 1 or Pebble Beach drive only along the Bay of Fundy. By the time we arrived they were going to close in an hour (and they lock the gate) so they waived the $25 entrance fee and told us to blast through there to get out before 5 pm. It was a shame as the views were spectacular. We briefly stopped to take a few pictures.

Then, we finally got to the hike we had wanted to take called Caribou Plains which is name in homage to the caribou who used to roam this area but really the only wildlife it now boasts is beavers who I guess are very busy (as beavers) damning a pond. Anyway, it was a nice hike through forests and around this beaver-made pond.
As we headed back to camp, it was late and we decided to treat ourselves to dinner and it turned out to be a fantastic treat at The Octopus’s Garden. They had hand made gluten free pasta and gluten free bread, so I had an incredible gluten free fettuccine with fresh tomatoes and Fundy caught lobster in a very light sauce. Oh my God…it was so delicious and such an unexpected treat to find in Alma, New Brunswick!

Returning to camp, I couldn’t ignore the fact that my toe next to my big toe had developed a blister from past days of hiking in moist socks and boots from all the rain. It was now hurting a lot and turning a bit black. I called Kaiser and of course they said head to emergency asap. What they don’t realize is emergency is an hour away in Moncton along dark, two lane country roads. There’s no way I’m doing that. So, we’ve decided to get up at 5 am (when it turns light here) and go in the morning to Moncton. Not exactly what we had in mind but better now than if we are in Newfoundland. Another adventure! I’ll give a full toe report tomorrow. I hope to toe the line and do what the doctor says and be ready to hike later tomorrow.
