The morning started off cool with a dramatic splay of clouds sweeping across Lake Huron. The weather could go either way. Sitting on a rocking bench near our campsite with coffee and meditation books, facing the lake with its gentle waves lapping and Mackinac Island in the distance, it was a lovely way to start the morning.

Our plan was to take the ferry to Mackinac Island and spend the day. As I was walking and ball-throwing to Lily into the lake and then down an endless stretch of green grassy lawn, I saw a dark ominous build up of clouds. Sure enough, my app said “rain starting in 4 minutes.” Racing back, we made it in time. My laptop said “severe thunderstorms”. My phone app said “cloudy.” Looked like the laptop wunderground.com was going to win out. Thunderstorms predicted on and off today. No way was I going on a ferry and getting rained out on our one day to Mackinac Island.
So, we moved to Plan B which was hanging around this campground that we’ve grown to appreciate despite the party atmosphere, music that intrudes on our campsite and people drinking a little too much and getting a little too loud over brewskies and bonfires at night. It’s a whole different life: kids sitting on the back of a tailgate while the truck drives around, bike riding with no helmets. It’s 1965 all over again.

The physical features of this campground are truly amazing. There’s the mile of shoreline around the lake, trails that go through woods and open fields, many places to sit, a great little camp store with everything you could need without leaving the campground and my latest discovery: the equivalent of two 18 hole golf courses serving as a dog “park.” That’s not counting the pool and various kid activities that allow kids to take off for the day on bikes and not come back until dinner. What a life.

But for us, we assumed it would be a rainy, stormy day, until it cleared up and was sunny and warm the rest of the day. By then, it was too late to go to the island so we hung out, went into Cheboygan to get dog food for Lily and later pizza in Mackinaw City. Tomorrow is our last day here and I don’t care if it says it’s going to snow, we’re going to Mackinac Island!
