After a morning sprinkle, we were left with sticky air and lots of green. A campground worker told me about their don’t ask don’t tell policy of using the expansive green lawn (I’d call it a pasture) behind the office for off leash dog romps. So, that was our first stop just to take the edge off Lily’s energy.

(Above: Lily’s field of dreams in our campground and our campsite.)
After a veggie scramble breakfast, I took Lily to explore the beaches of Door County’s northernmost tip. We’re camped at Ellison Bay, near the top so it wasn’t a far drive to cross over from the Green Bay side to the Lake Michigan side and Newport State Park. Springing for an annual Wisconsin State Park permit (it’s going to a good cause), Lily and I discovered lots of forested trails and a sweeping sandy, dog-friendly beach. It was entertaining for both of us for hours. Of course, Lily’s fan base (kids) relieved me of getting carpal tunnel syndrome by throwing the ball endlessly into Lake Michigan. Maybe I need to write a book about all the lakes and oceans Lily’s swam in.

We returned to a sleepy scene: Peter and Cali dozing in the afternoon warmth. Soon, we took off for an early seating of a Door County tradition: a fish boil. It didn’t sound very appealing but it definitely sounded local. The tradition stems from Door County’s Scandinavian settlers over 100 years ago who prepared white fish over a roaring fire using simple ingredients: salt, onion, red potatoes and butter. It was an efficient way to feed a large group of people (lumberjacks and fishermen in their case, tourists in ours). Friends of my friend, Debi, recommended it and they were still alive so it sounded like a fun idea.

It was definitely unusual, casual, simple but good food. Dessert was a delicious cherry pie and ice cream. Cherry orchards and pick your own orchards are everywhere. We walked it off by going down to the local beach in Fish Creek with the dogs and then returned to camp. We continue to get the impression that Door County is the midwest version of Cape Cod. That’s a good thing. It’s not overbuilt but is a true summer vacation place for many people, presumably from the midwest.

It was a full and relaxing day.

(Cherry orchard in case you can’t see the cherries.)
